The Huron County Glee Sisters, and their new sister organization “Elliot’s Band”, invite everyone in the community to join them for an informal Christmas sing-along on Dec. 17th, at 3 p.m. in St Andrew’s United Church.

According to organizer Leslie Bella, “Many events have been delayed or postponed because of weather, but we will proceed whatever the weather!”

The one-hour event will feature both sacred and secular Christmas music plus there will be an opportunity to make song requests interspersed with the group favorites. Admission is free and everyone is welcome.

FAR TO GO

Alison Pick, author of Far to Go, was the guest writer at Books and Brunch held at The Little Inn of Bayfield on Dec. 5. The Village Book Shop organized the event which saw close to 20 people gather from such locales as Exeter and Scarborough. The delectable brunch was followed by a very thoughtful reading delivered by Pick and a time for questions. The book is set in Czechoslovakia in World War II and traces one family's journey through this heart wrenching period for humanity. (Photo by Melody Falconer-Pounder)

AND THE WINNER IS...

IMG_8010
Siobhan Kleuskens, daughter of Marty and Tara of Goderich, was the lucky winner of the toy chest filled to the brim with toys for both boys and girls of all ages. Siobhan will no doubt be sharing her good fortune with her little brother Aiden. The draw on the raffle, which was a fundraiser for the Bayfield Optimist Club, was made by Santa himself at the club's annual Breakfast with Santa event held on Dec. 12. Assisting Santa with the draw was Optimist Mike Dixon. The club is pleased to report that approx. $1,600 was raised from the raffle making it the most successful one to date. UNITED CHURCH

Unfortunately another round of snow squalls forced the cancellation of St. Andrew’s United Church’s Christmas Carol Service on Dec. 12. Disappointed but not daunted the choir is now well practiced for the 2011 show as they plan to stage the concert they had been rehearsing next year.

But there is still something to look forward to, on Dec. 24 at 7:30 p.m. a Christmas Eve Service with Communion will be held at St. Andrew’s.

PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH

The congregation of Knox Presbyterian Church in Bayfield invites those in the community to join them for their services during the week of Christmas.

The fourth service of Advent will be held at Knox on Dec. 19 at 11 a.m. Special music will be performed by soloist Brian Hoy.

A Service of Carols and Candlelight, featuring, “The Shepherd’s Tale” will be held on Dec. 24 at 7 p.m.

And then on Dec. 26 at 11 a.m. the first Sunday after Christmas will be celebrated with a Service of Prayer, Scripture and Song.

Empties for Alzheimers

Two Bayfield women would like to invite everyone to share your empties for Alzheimers this holiday season.

Dianne Brandon and Carrie Courtney will be participating in the 2011 Walk for Memories on Jan. 29 and they have come up with a unique idea as a fundraiser.

It is, of course, hoped that everyone will celebrate responsibly this festive season and when doing so plan to donate the empty beer bottles and cans; wine and liquor bottles and even soda cans as well, to their team, “For the Love of Elane and Doris”. The ladies being honored are currently living with Alzheimer’s Disease, Elane Brandon, Courtney’s grandmother, and Doris Schilbe, Dianne’s mother.

Empties of all sorts may be dropped off at Brandon's Hardware in Bayfield, or arrangements can be made for pick up on either Dec. 18th or Jan. 9 (other times can be arranged as well). For more information call Brandon’s Hardware at 519 565-2677.

Film Society

The Bayfield Film Society has moved their Fall Series to Wednesday nights. The final cinematic experience of the fall series was to be shown on Dec. 8 but has now been rescheduled for Jan. 12.

The film, entitled, Me & Orsen Wells, will be shown at the Bayfield Town Hall beginning at 7:30 p.m.

This is an opportunity to see Toronto Film Festival Films without having to leave the village. For more information and for tickets call Jane Rowat at 519 565-5838 or e-mail wjrowat@tcc.on.ca.

CHAP

Village residents may be surprised to learn that they don't have to drive to a larger centre for heart healthy care.

Blood pressure measurement and monitoring sessions are being held right here in Bayfield as part of the Cardiovascular Health Awareness Program (CHAP).

The goal of CHAP is to promote cardiovascular health in the local community and to raise awareness about the importance of blood pressure monitoring.

Trained volunteers will help participants measure their blood pressure and complete a heart and stroke risk profile. A copy of these results will be given to the participant and, with their permission, sent to their family physician and regular pharmacist.

The sessions are run from 9:30 a.m. to 1 p.m., on the third Thursday of every month, at Pharmasave Michael's Pharmacy.

To learn more please call local CHAP Coordinator, Kelly Webster, at 519-236-4373 ex 632.

Agricultural Society

The Bayfield Agricultural Society is on the brink of an unprecedented accomplishment with their annual wreath fundraiser. If they sell just a few more wreaths or tails (swags) they will reach $6,000 in sales.

As everyone can imagine this is a very exciting prospect for the members of the organization that bring the Bayfield Fall Fair to life each year. The organizers of the wreath fundraiser greatly appreciate all of those people who have supported their efforts so far and hope that others will help them reach their goal. It is not too late to purchase a wreath to adorn a front door during the upcoming holiday season and well on into the winter.

The wreaths and tails (swags) can be purchased by calling Emma VanderWouden at 519 482-3020 or evanderwouden@tcc.on.ca. The money raised from the sale of wreaths goes to support the Bayfield Fall Fair held on the third weekend in August each year.

Brvta

The Bayfield River Valley Trail Association (BRVTA) has had a busy year and due to ongoing community support, their projects will continue to grow. The Sawmill, Woodland and Heritage Trails cover a total of 10 KMs and are being enjoyed by both local residents and visitors.

People are invited to support the trails financially by joining the BRVTA. Yearly memberships are $20 per individual and $25 per family. Cheques for memberships can be made payable to the Bayfield River Valley Trail Association and mailed to P.O. Box 531 Bayfield, ON. N0M 1G0. Memberships are available from Outdoor Projects, 6 Main Street in the village.

To learn more about volunteering with the BRVTA or for more information please contact Member Coordinator, Helen Varekamp at hvarekamp@tcc.on.ca or call 519 565-5442.

Thousands of hours of volunteer time have gone into creating the trails with the goal to provide walking trails for community health, enjoyment, environmental awareness and tourism. Over the past three years the BRVTA has produced a valuable community asset, but this trail project is still in its infancy and most expensive stage. Bridges, boardwalks, signage and erosion control are all capital investments that must be purchased before trails can be opened.

The BRVTA has brought this community closer together; support and the generosity of our landowner partners have enabled them to sponsor numerous fundraiser walks. Groups from other communities are learning about and walking the trail network. The BRVTA reports that feedback has been wonderful!

dining for seniors

Bayfield Dining for Seniors would like all of their members to know that they have cancelled the dinner meeting scheduled for Dec. 16.

If the weather cooperates the Christmas Dinner with turkey and trimmings will be served on Dec. 21 at noon at the Bayfield Community Centre. Please call Pearl Hartman for more information at 519 482-5283.

REMEMBER ME?

There are countless photographs of people in the Bayfield Historical Society’s Archives collection, but sadly their names were never recorded. In this section we will showcase an image with the hopes that one of our subscribers might be able to identify the individual(s) in the photo. Please email your information to the Editor’s attention at the address listed near the bottom of the page in “Submissions” or you can email the archivist directly at bayarchives@tcc.on.ca.

This week, a photograph taken in Oct. of 1964 is highlighted. This family enjoyed a visit from the wife’s mother from Holland. Does anyone recognize the members of this clan?

Remember Me 74

In Issue 74, a photograph of two gentlemen standing in front of St. Andrew’s United Church in 1963 was shown. Cal Scotchmer identified the man on the right to be Ted Turner while Ted Turner himself, wrote to say that the man in Mountie garb is Gerald Wallis.

Remember Me 75

In Issue 75, we contrasted the bleak weather outside, with a photo of a delightful garden taken in 1958. The proud gardener standing amongst the flowers is Mrs. Hobson. Does anyone know anything about this lady with the green thumb?

PHOTOS AND STORY BY MELODY FALCONER-POUNDER

A record number of participants took part in the Bayfield Optimist Club’s annual Breakfast with Santa at the Bayfield Village Inn on Dec. 12.

The fifth annual event was held on a slush and sleigh bells kind of day but the weather held for the brunch at which people consumed 23 dozen eggs and 18 pounds of bacon.

The club greatly appreciates those businesses who sponsor the family friendly function including: Bayfield Foodland, Fairholme Dairy, Outside Projects, Bayfield Village Inn, Brandon’s Hardware and Albert Schilbe.

In addition to a hearty meal, several children took advantage of the opportunity to spend a little time with the jolly old elf, himself. It is reported that Mr. Claus made it safely back to his workshop before the storm set in again.

SUBMISSIONS

One of the more fun aspects of my preparations for Christmas is Breakfast with Santa hosted by the Bayfield Optimist Club. I have the joyous task of photographing those special moments when the youngsters approach Santa to tell him what their holiday wishes are.

Jolly Ol’ Santa and I have been working together for the last five years and may I say the Elf is a pleasure to work with. He’s got the spirit in him; he’s gentle, kind and patient. He never promises a gift when asked for one but says that he’ll do his very best to make a wish come true.

Some youngsters may get overzealous and pull at his beard, while others burst into tears at the sight of the man in the bright red suit. Still others are bashful and require a few encouraging words on approach and the smallest of the wee, well, quite often they sleep through the entire visit. No matter their reaction he never fails to wish them all the blessings of the season.

Many of the youngsters are now veterans of the breakfast and they’ve got the routine down. It is so wonderful to see the changes in these children each year as they grow and mature, that is until they reach the age where they feel too grown-up to have a visit with Santa and they pass us by. Sadly that seems to happen in the wink of an eye. So for those of you with youngsters whose eyes still get round as saucers at the sound of “Ho! Ho! Ho!” treasure each moment and hold it close to your hearts. And from Santa, and I, best wishes for a very blessed Christmas. - Melody
